I took up Scientific Reading instruction to learn the technical skills of effective reading, but found that this was not enough. In order to read more effectively, I needed to examine why I communicated the way I did. As I dropped the limitations and affectations imposed on me by mortal mind, not only did my reading more authentically express the meaning of the words on the page, but I also found myself living a life more genuine to my understanding of Christian Science.

I am grateful to God for Scientific Reading. The words of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, the pearl of great price, are illumined when spoken scientifically. There is a discernible change in the way I read at church services, testimony meetings, and in my daily speech because of the wisdom taught in Scientific Reading. Scientific Reading brings clarity to the vocalization of our Pastor, the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, our only preachers.

I started working with Alex Cavalli as a reading coach when I was elected as Second Reader, and was so impressed with the changes made that I asked to work with him again when elected as First Reader.

At the start, making progress was challenging and I wasn’t always sure about the path I was on but with Alex’s clear guidance, inexhaustible patience and constant encouragement, and the high goal always before me, I steadily learned to identify and correct the habits of speech that were hindering rather than supporting my role as a Reader of the books of our Pastor. As these obstacles were overcome and I began to come to grips with what truly is the science of reading, so I began to discover more and more of the science of what I’m reading.

Learning to read this way has also led quite naturally to a transformation in my thought which has proven to be very freeing.

I cannot thank Alex enough for the work we’ve done, and the blessings it has brought – for me as a Reader, as a student of Christian Science, and for our church.

I've had an opportunity to work with many reading and vocal coaches over the years. Scientific Reading is far more comprehensive, and goes much deeper in thought and delivery, than any others I've experienced. Mary Baker wrote, "I used to be called a good reader of the Scriptures. I had a fine instructor in reading, Mr. Sol Wilson. If there was in the reading any false tone, he would catch it and then we would catch it." (Twelve Years with Mary Baker Eddy, by Irving Tomlinson) Alex knows how to discern the false tones and bring out the true. It took a while to understand exactly what adjustments needed to be made in my reading, but when I committed myself wholeheartedly to it, the blessings touched every aspect of my life - the practice, teaching, reading and everyday conversations. I learned that Scientific Reading removes personal sense, making way for a spiritual sense of joy, understanding, and peace that is deeply felt. And the listeners feel it too!
